Introduction to Flower Bulbs - Summer and Spring-Flowering Bulb
by: Kirk Gordon
Bulb flowers are popular in the Dutch culture (Netherlands), however, they are native to central Asia. Dahlias are said to be native to Mexico, Hippeastrum is from South America, Freesias and calla lilies are native to South Africa.
Although bulbs are not native to the Netherlands, the professional Dutch horticulturalists are the primary reason why bulbs are as popular as they are. They also get credit for being pioneers in breeding specialized bulbs with distinctive, vibrant shades of colors. The Netherlands cultivate some of the finest bulb flowers available. Because the Netherlands have an ideal climate for bulb production, they grow a lot of bulbs and are pretty good at it, too. Certain parts of the Netherlands is even known as the "bulb region."
In general, bulbs are categorized into two categories - the "spring-flowering bulbs" and the "summer-flowering...

St. Patrick's Day Traditions
St. Patrick's Day Traditions
by: Niall Cinneide
On March 17, 431AD, when Patrick of Ireland died, a new holiday was born.
Though the celebrations began in the 700's as a traditional Catholic Holy Day, over the years St. Patrick's Day has become more a secular holiday which marks the beginning for spring.
The official date for the beginning of spring is March 21, and this also supports the tradition of wearing green.
Green is the color for life and growth and if you desire good luck and on this day, you should "be wearin' a touch o' the green!
The spreading of Christianity and Catholicism to the Irish of the 4th and 5th century is mainly attributed to St. Patrick, who received the name of Patrick while in seminary after his captivity in Ireland. Traditions that originated back in the 7th century have changed from being strictly religious to a St. Patrick's Day where "everybody is Irish for the day".

Spring Home Projects in Northern New England
by: Mark J. Donovan
As I sit on a plane in route from Chicago to Boston this evening, I realize I have been staring out into the dark abyss contemplating the arrival of spring. Spring is a time of anticipation and renewed life. A time when the snow finally abates and the Robins return to rebuild their nests. And a time when Tulips and Daffodils emerge from the ground and bloom, if ever so briefly. It is also a time for the voracious Black Fly that we northern dwellers know only too well. For me, however, it is a time to shift into a higher gear; there are outdoor projects that have accumulated over the winter months and there is traditional spring tasks that every homeowner is compelled to do.
There are two main questions I debate as I compile my spring ?To-Do? list: What to do and when to do it?
As always with a non-vinyl sided house, there is painting. Over the years, I have come to the conclusion...

ESPN the Magazine
ESPN the Magazine
by: David Chase
Back in the day ESPN was merely space fodder for people with cable subscriptions; back when only the "real" sports fan (me) could sit in front of the tube and bear with the constant rambling of numbers and statistics. Oh it was great. Back before they offered a cheap magazine subscription that was nothing more then an extension to their online subscription service they offered through their website. These were the good old...
